How to winterise your pool: 7 simple steps

“Ensure your pool remains in top condition and ready for the next swimming season while safeguarding it from the winter elements in Taupō and Rotorua.

As autumn settles in and leaves begin to fall, it’s the perfect time to start preparing your pool for the colder months ahead. Winterising your pool properly can prevent costly repairs and maintenance issues, ensuring it stays in top shape for next summer. Follow our easy 7-step guide to winterise your pool in Taupo and Rotorua and enjoy peace of mind all season long.

Step 1: Clean the pool thoroughly

Clear debris from the pool: Remove leaves, twigs, and debris from the surface using a skimmer net. Leaves contain phosphates which are food for algae, so giving the pool a thorough clean before closing it will help prevent algae from developing.

Vacuum the pool: Vacuum the pool’s bottom and walls to get rid of dirt and debris.

Brush the pool walls: Brush the walls and tiles to prevent algae buildup and mineral deposits.

Step 2: Balance the water chemistry

Test the water: Check the pH, alkalinity, and chlorine levels.

Adjust pH and alkalinity: Aim for a pH level of 7.4 to 7.6, and alkalinity of 80–120 ppm. It’s also important to reduce chlorine levels during the winter months.

Shock the pool: Add pool shock to break down contaminants and sanitize the pool water to prevent algae growth.

Add a copper-based algaecide: Algae can still grow in cool temperatures, and if left unchecked, can lead to a green, murky pool come springtime. By adding a copper-based algaecide it will prevent the growth of algae and other microorganisms by releasing copper ions into the water.

Step 3: Lower the water level (optional)

Water level: Consider lowering the water level just below the skimmer (about 4–6 inches) to reduce debris entry and help secure the cover, but not too much as you still want to avoid exposing the plumbing.

Step 4: Clean and winterise pool equipment

Clean the filter: Backwash or clean your pool filter (whether it’s sand, cartridge, or DE) to remove debris and contaminants.

Check pool pump and heater: Ensure the pool pump and heater are turned off, cleaned, and ready for winter storage.

Reduce filtration time: Reduce filtration time to half the summer settings through winter. This will save energy and prolong the life of your pool’s equipment.

Remove and store pool accessories: Take out any ladders, skimmer baskets, and pool toys, and store them in a dry, cool place to protect them from weathering.

Step 5: Clean and store pool cover

Remove floating cover: Make sure your floating cover is completely removed, cleaned, and stored for future use. This will prevent the buildup of algae or mold and ensure it lasts longer.

Install a debris cover: If you have a debris cover (solid or mesh), install it securely over the pool. A debris cover is breathable and allows air circulation, which prevents moisture buildup and keeps debris from falling into the pool. Make sure the debris cover is tightly secured with water bags, straps, or another method to prevent it from shifting or blowing off during windy weather.

Step 6: Maintain the pool during winter

Check the pool regularly: During winter, check your pool every 2-3 weeks to ensure that the cover is secure and that there’s no significant debris accumulation.

Test the water chemistry: Test the water every 4-6 weeks and adjust the chemicals as needed to prevent algae growth and ensure proper water balance.

Monitor water level: Check that the water level doesn’t drop too low, which could lead to damage to your pool’s plumbing and skimmer.
