Poolside summer: Top tips for a safe and fun swim season

“Supervise, supervise, supervise. Water safety is everyone's responsibility.

For families with residential swimming pools, the summer holiday season is a time for creating cherished memories with children and grandchildren.

However, as we welcome our little ones to our pools, it's essential to prioritise their safety and well-being.

By following some simple guidelines, you can help prevent accidents and create a safe and enjoyable swimming environment for your friends and family:

  • Supervise, supervise, supervise: Always keep an eye on children and vulnerable individuals when they're in or around the swimming pool. It's also important to establish clear pool rules for your guests, such as no running, no diving, and no swimming alone.

  • Fence it: Ensure your pool is surrounded by a compliant and sturdy fence. Gates should be self-latching and locked when the pool is not in use. Remember to keep furniture and other climbable items at a safe distance from the pool fence to prevent little ones from using them as a step to climb over.

  • Gate safety: Regularly check and maintain your pool gate to ensure it’s secure and functioning properly.

  • Slip-resistant surfaces: Ensure the pool surround is clean and slip-resistant to prevent accidents.

  • Secure pool equipment: Keep pool equipment, such as pumps and filters, out of reach of children and secured to prevent tampering.

  • Electrical safety: Ensure all electrical equipment around the pool is installed and maintained correctly.

  • Regular water testing: Regularly test your pool water to ensure it's safe and healthy for swimming.

  • Store chemicals safely: Always store in a dark, dry location with proper ventilation. Keep oxidisers and acids far away from each other and if unsure, always refer to the product labels. Keep them in a secure place that is inaccessible to children and pets.

  • Proper chemical use: Always follow the manufacturer's instructions when using pool chemicals, and take necessary safety precautions.

  • First aid kit: Keep a first aid kit nearby and ensure everyone knows where it is and what to do in case of an emergency. Learning CPR is also a valuable skill to have as a pool owner.

With these essential pool safety tips in mind, you'll be well on your way to a fun and worry-free summer by the pool. Happy swimming!
