Dive into the details: Turning your pool dream into a plan
“From start to finish, our expert team manages every single detail - literally.
From envisioning your perfect pool to making it a reality, the journey can feel overwhelming but knowing what to expect can make all the difference. At Plateau Pools and Spas, we're all about making your pool building experience seamless and stress-free. From start to finish, our expert team manages every single detail - literally.
What sets us apart is that the estimate you receive from us covers the entire scope of your project - from council consent through to your finished pool surrounds. That means you won’t be left chasing subcontractor quotes, facing surprise costs, or stuck with a half-finished project. Many other companies don’t offer this level of transparency or certainty. In this blog, we'll take you through the process of starting a new pool build, from initial enquiry to obtaining council consent.
Here are the key steps involved in getting your project approved and ready to go:
Phone consult
After your initial enquiry, we'll schedule a phone consult with Anna to discuss your pool vision, covering how you'll use the pool, desired design features, project scope, site considerations and project budget. We’ll encourage you to think about how you want to use your pool long-term - will it be for swimming laps, relaxing partially submerged with a book, or safe play with young children? Thinking about your vision, style preferences, and budget for the whole project (not just the pool itself) helps us tailor your plan from the very beginning. This conversation will help us provide indicative pricing and timeframes, so you can decide if you'd like to proceed with your pool project.
Site visit
Next, our experienced Project Manager Regan will visit your property to discuss your pool plans in detail. He'll assess the site, advise on pool size, location and design, and cover features like filtration, lighting and fencing to create a cohesive outdoor space that meets your needs and budget.
Proposal
This is where our point of difference really shines. We'll provide a detailed estimate outlining exactly what's included in your pool project price. Unlike many companies, our estimate looks beyond just the pool - it includes all required works right through to the completion of your pool surrounds. You’ll know from the outset what your full investment looks like, so you can move forward with complete confidence. We'll also offer indicative pricing for additional landscape work, such as paving, decking, planting and fencing, to help you plan your entire outdoor space.
Confirmation
Once you've accepted the estimate, we'll finalise the details with a sales contract and deposit payment. With that, we'll kick-start the background work on your pool project, including concept plans and consent applications, and keep you updated on the expected start date.
Finalise your tailored concept plan
Our team will finalise your pool design concept, creating plans, side elevations and site plans for your approval. Once signed off, we'll submit these plans for council consent. Note that if you need full landscape design files, we can work with a landscape architect or provide a separate estimate for this service.
Consents lodged
We'll handle the entire consent application process, completing all necessary plans and documentation. Consent typically takes 4-6 weeks to obtain, and we'll notify you of the estimated start date once it's granted. If resource consent is required, we'll discuss it with you and provide an estimate for any additional fees.

Inspired and ready to start shaping your vision into reality?
Here’s a quick checklist to help you prepare for your consultation - thinking about these in advance will give you the clearest, most accurate estimate for your whole project:
How do you want to use your pool? (e.g., swimming laps, relaxation, children’s play)
Who will be using the pool most often? (e.g., family, kids, adults, guests)
What look and feel do you want to create in your outdoor space?
What features matter most to you? (e.g., heating, spa, shallow entry, lighting, fencing, automation)
What budget do you have for the entire project - including landscaping, decking and surrounds, not just the pool shell?
